Pope St. Zephyrinus

Pope St. Zephyrinus governed the Roman Church from about 199 to 217, one of the longer reigns of the early papacy. He led the Church through a turbulent period of doctrinal controversy, especially the disputes over the mystery of the Trinity, as various teachers pressed errors that either confused or divided the persons of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Zephyrinus upheld the true faith while striving to keep peace among contending parties.

Described by his critic Hippolytus, not always fairly, as a simple and unlettered man, he relied greatly on his gifted deacon and later successor Callistus. Together they defended the Church's authority to forgive grave sins and resisted both extremes of the Trinitarian debates. Zephyrinus was buried in his own cemetery near the catacomb of St. Callistus. Venerated as a saint and by tradition a martyr, he is celebrated on 20 December.
