St. Gregory of Spoleto

St. Gregory of Spoleto (died c. 304) was, according to his traditional acts, a priest of Spoleto in Umbria, central Italy, during the persecution of the emperor Diocletian. Arrested for openly professing and preaching the Christian faith, he was brought before the Roman governor and commanded to sacrifice to the pagan gods, which he steadfastly refused to do.

Subjected to a series of cruel tortures meant to break his constancy, he endured them without yielding, continuing to confess Christ, and was at last condemned and beheaded. His relics were venerated at Spoleto, where his cult was ancient. Though the surviving account of his passion is of later date and contains legendary elements, his veneration as a martyr of the Diocletian persecution is long established, and he is honored among the saints of the Umbrian Church.
