Why Remain Catholic. Even in Times of Crisis

In an age marked by widespread institutional distrust and spiritual confusion, a question is frequently put to faithful Catholics: “With all the scandals, moral failures, and doctrinal confusion surrounding clergy today, why do you still stay Catholic?”

To those outside the fold, remaining steadfast in the Church during periods of intense internal crisis can seem inexplicable. Yet, for those who understand the true identity and nature of the Catholic Church, the answer is remarkably simple and deeply convicting: We do not stay because of human perfection; we stay because Christ established this Church, and it alone guards the fullness of divine truth.

The Office Is Not the Man

One of the fundamental missteps in modern thinking is confusing the dignity of a sacred office with the moral standing of the individual who occupies it. When political leaders betray their trust, citizens do not abandon the concept of the nation itself.

In an even more profound way, the sacred hierarchy of the Catholic Church—Pope, Bishop, and Priest—was directly instituted by Jesus Christ Himself (Matthew 16:18–19). Human leaders may waver, fail, or fall into grave error in their personal lives, but human corruption cannot invalidate a divine institution.

Human empires, secular institutions, and man-made denominations inevitably crumble when infiltrated by corruption. The Catholic Church, however, has endured two thousand years of persecution, internal strife, heresy, and betrayal—and she remains standing. She endures not by human strength, but because of the divine promise: "The gates of hell shall not prevail against it" (Matthew 16:18).
