Why the Millennium Might Already Be Behind Us

If you spend any time listening to popular televangelists or reading modern end-times books, you have undoubtedly heard about a coming, literal thousand-year reign of Christ. The popular narrative claims that one day soon, Christ will return to earth, set up a visible political kingdom, and rule bodily for a millennium before a final conflict with evil takes place.

Yet, the Catholic Church has historically rejected this idea—known as millenarianism—warning against the belief in a literal, political kingdom ruled physically by Christ on earth before the end of time. Christ returns once to judge the living and the dead. So how are we to understand the mysterious passage in Revelation 20?

"And he seized the dragon, that ancient serpent, who is the Devil and Satan, and bound him for a thousand years... After that he must be loosed for a little while." — Revelation 20:2, 3

One compelling historical interpretation, rooted in the teachings of Saint Augustine, suggests that this thousand-year period is symbolic. It may represent the long historical age in which Christ reigns spiritually through His Church while Satan’s power to deceive entire nations is restrained.
