St. Bernadette Soubirous

St. Bernadette Soubirous was born on 7 January 1844 at Lourdes in southern France, the eldest child of a poor miller's family, and died on 16 April 1879 at Nevers. Sickly, asthmatic, and unschooled, she was fourteen when, in 1858, the Blessed Virgin Mary appeared to her eighteen times in a grotto at Massabielle. During these apparitions Mary asked for prayer and penance, revealed a hidden spring whose waters became linked with many healings, and, when asked her name, replied, 'I am the Immaculate Conception' — words Bernadette did not understand but faithfully repeated.

Subjected to intense questioning by civil and Church authorities, she never wavered in her simple, consistent account. Shunning the fame that came to Lourdes — now one of the world's great pilgrimage shrines — she entered the Sisters of Charity of Nevers, where she lived hidden and often in suffering until her early death. She was canonized in 1933, honored not for the apparitions themselves but for her humble holiness, and her body is venerated as incorrupt.
