CrucisSt. Cyril of Jerusalem
St. Cyril of Jerusalem was born around 313 and died in 386 at Jerusalem, where he served as bishop. His episcopate was repeatedly disrupted by the Arian controversy, and he was driven from his see into exile three times by those who opposed the Nicene faith before being finally restored. He took part in the First Council of Constantinople in 381, which reaffirmed the divinity of Christ and the Holy Spirit.
He is best known for his Catechetical Lectures, a series of instructions given to those preparing for baptism and to the newly baptized. These addresses are a precious witness to the beliefs, sacramental practice, and liturgy of the fourth-century Church, explaining the Creed, baptism, and the Eucharist with pastoral clarity. He is honored as a Father and Doctor of the Church, and his feast is kept on 18 March.
