St. Kizito

St. Kizito was the youngest of the Martyrs of Uganda, a boy of about fourteen who served as a page at the court of King Mwanga II of Buganda in the 1880s. Lively and eager, he had been drawn to the Christian faith taught by the older pages, and it was St. Charles Lwanga, the master of the pages, who protected him and baptized him during the night before his death, when open profession of Christ had become a capital crime.

When King Mwanga, enraged that the young Christians of his court resisted his corruption and clung to their new faith, condemned them to death, Kizito went to his martyrdom cheerfully, holding the hand of Charles Lwanga. He was among those burned alive at Namugongo on 3 June 1886, dying with the older pages he had followed to Christ. Canonized by Pope Paul VI in 1964, he is remembered as a patron of children and is celebrated with the Uganda Martyrs on 3 June.
