St. Padre Pio was born Francesco Forgione on 25 May 1887 in Pietrelcina, in southern Italy, and died on 23 September 1968 at San Giovanni Rotondo, where he had lived for most of his priestly life. He joined the Capuchin Franciscans as a youth, taking the name Pio, and was ordained a priest in 1910. In 1918, while praying before a crucifix, he received the visible stigmata — the wounds of Christ — which he bore for fifty years until his death, a phenomenon that drew both intense devotion and prolonged investigation by Church authorities.
Renowned as a mystic and a tireless confessor, he spent long hours each day in the confessional, where he was credited with reading hearts and drawing countless souls back to God. Many extraordinary graces and reported healings were attributed to his intercession. Moved by compassion for the sick, he founded the hospital Casa Sollievo della Sofferenza ('Home for the Relief of Suffering'). He was canonized by Pope St. John Paul II in 2002.
